What is the Stimpmeter and how does it work?  

The Stimpmeter is a 36-inch long, aluminum tool used by golf course superintendents to make a standard measurement of the relative speed and uniformity of their greens.  A Stimpmeter reading is actually a distance measurement in feet and inches.

In the coming weeks, we will be starting to update you regularly with the stimpmeter readings from various greens.  They will be listed in the table below.

 15/04/11 Avg 9.9 After our recent growth spurt and how we have handled it, here is our stimp meter readings as of today at 10.30am,  11th hole at 10.0, the 15th at 9.8 and the 17th at 9.8.  A consistent average reading of "Fast".
     
     
     
     

 The USGA stimpmetered putting greens across the country to produce the following recommendations:

  • Slow greens: 4.5 feet
  • Medium greens: 6.5 feet
  • Fast greens: 8.5 feet

For the US Open, they recommend:

  • Slow greens: 6.5 feet
  • Medium greens: 8.5 feet
  • Fast greens: 10.5 feet
